Caribbean Cruise 2017 Day 6: St. Kitts

Thursday December 7, 2017

Today’s stop on the cruise was the island of St. Kitts and the port of Basseterre. we had purchased a shore excursion for this island which was a ride on the St. Kitts scenic railway. Thankfully, we didn’t have to be ashore until 10am so we were able to have a leisurely breakfast before heading out.

We met our shore excursion coordinator on the dock and she took us over to the transport to the train. The train doesn’t make a complete grand circle tour, but it travels on the north east side of the island and has two loops. One of the loops is at the airport and the other in the middle of a grassy field on the northwest part of the island. The jeep ride through the western side of the island took us through a few small towns and some wonderful scenery before the dropped us off in the field to meet the train.

The train was a relic from the sugar cane days and was open top so you could see the coastline pass by as we traveled along the northern edge of the island and then down the east coast and back towards Basseterre. There were a few photo ops that we stopped at as well as some entertaining singers and narrators that kept the trip interesting.

Back at the airport, we loaded back into vehicles to take us back to the port. Most of the ports on these Caribbean islands have some sort of restaurant and duty free/shopping bonanza and this was no different. There were many different places to look at and wander around in before getting back on the ship. I managed to get my magnet and we killed time before boarding.

Tonight we were able to get in to see the stage show titled Elements. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was entertaining even though I didn’t quite get the four elements connected plot to the show. I also think I recognized some of the crew members I had seen doing other things on the ship in the show. At least they are being put to good use!

Tomorrow is our last excursion so we called it a night as we had a full day tomorrow.
